Eden Rocks Shore Dives in Grand Cayman

When we took a cruise of the Western Caribbean, it included Grand Cayman as a port. We were able to scuba dive one of the shore dives there. There are actually two shore dives off the downtown area of Georgetown which were recommended to us.  For cruiseship passengers, it is fairly easy to locate.  As soon as the tender boats arrive at the pier, we walked to the right and less than 5 minutes, we arrived at Eden Rocks Dive Centre.  Don’t be fooled by a new competitor they have just before it.  Eden Rocks Dive Centre is closer to the dive sites than their new competitor.

Cayman Islands are relatively expensive for diving with an average of $85 US for a two tank boat dive trip.  However, with limited time as with cruiseship passengers, we were able to do decent diving for much less.  If you are bringing all your gear except for tanks and weights, you can rent them for about $10 US.  Even renting complete gear will run much less than a boat trip.  Eden Rocks has a patio with lockers in the back and an area with a ladder where the entry to the water is.  The two dive sites are called Eden Rocks and Devil’s Grotto.  They are reached with a short swim out towards some various buoys that mark the sites. 

We ended up doing Devil’s Grotto which had some nice coral formations.  The maximum depth was about 46 feet with a water temperature of about 80 degrees.  The visibility was even better than what we experienced in Key Largo just a few days prior.  There was a very nice large swim through tunnel and several smaller ones throughout the site.  Inside the large tunnel, we saw a large resident tarpon.  The fish life including parrotfish, groupers and tangs was healthy at this shore dive and it is interesting to note that it even exists so close to the cruiseships. Other divers said they saw some turtles too.

We would like to do the other shore dive site, Eden Rocks which is to the right of Devil’s Grotto during the next time we are in Grand Cayman.  These sites are ideal for beginner level divers.  My partner was a newly certified diver and had no problems with this shore dive.

Iceland: Tectonic Plate Diving

Iceland is Europe’s westernmost country, and occupies a strategic location in the North Atlantic, straddling the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, on the edge of the Arctic Circle. One of the coldest countries in the world, it is also one of the world’s most volcanically active hotspots. Iceland is known today for its mix of glaciers, bubbly hot springs, rugged fjords and fiery volcanoes.

Iceland can give you a truly unique diving experience you can’t get anywhere else: diving between two tectonic plates, astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the fault line where two of the Earth’s tectonic plates are drifting apart. It is not only unique, but it is also exclusive – only few people have dared to try the experience. To get to the diving site, you first have to drive deep into geo-thermal territory and tectonic plate activity. If you’re not yet thrilled enough, you can drive the next day to its glaciers in the south and race snowmobiles.

The country is the most sparsely populated in Europe, with just 283,000 people living in an area the size of England or the US state of Kentucky. Over half of the population lives down in its southwestern corner, around Reykjavik, the small but cosmopolitan capital. The other decent-sized population center is Akureyri, up on the north coast.

What Else to Do

All long-distance buses and domestic planes begin their trips from Reykjavik. You can visit Geysir, the original geyser from which all other gushing hot springs get their name, and the spectacular waterfalls at Gullfoss. The country’s only international airport at Keflavik is on the Reykjanes Peninsula, an area teeming with birdlife and whales.

Outside Reykjavik and the populated southwestern corner, the wilder side of Iceland meets your eye — wide-open spaces of vivid green fringed with coastlines of red and black volcanic sands set against a backdrop of brooding hills and mountains. On the west coast, in the towns of Borgarnes and Reykhold and the surrounding countryside, every landscape feature you see will be associated with parts of the Icelandic sagas.

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is the country’s most accessible hiking destination. Arguably, Iceland’s most dramatic scenery is in the far northwest, the West Fjords, where you’ll find tiny fishing villages ensconced at the foot of table-top mountains or tucked away in the neck of narrow fjords which protect the houses from ferocious Arctic storms that batter this exposed part of the country.

You can relax for a day at Akureyri. From here, it’s easy to go inside the Arctic Circle to the island of Grimsey. The country’s biggest tourist attraction outside Reykjavik is Lake Myvatn, one hour away to the east of Akureyri. Many species of duck and waterfowl nest in this lake, which is surrounded by evidence of volcanic activity, including long-dormant cinder cones and still-steaming lava fields. North of Myvatn is the small town of Husavik, the best place for summer whale-watching cruises, while just inland to the east you can hike along deep river gorges of the Jokulsargljufur National Park to the awesome Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

Iceland’s most rewarding long-distance hiking route is found near the glacial lagoon, Jokulsarlon. The Porsmork trail is one of the world’s most exhilarating walking paths. In the south coast, you can take a ferry to the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman islands) to survey the world’s largest puffin colonies and have a look at Surtsey, the new island created by volcanic eruptions in the mid-1960s.

When to Go

Icelandic weather is notoriously unpredictable. In summer, there’s a fair chance of bright and sunny days. Many bus routes through the interior don’t start until late June or early July when the snow finally melts. The sun does not fully set during June, and though there’s no true midnight sun, nights are light from mid-May to early August across the country. Between September and January, the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights can be seen. Hiking and camping are out of the question in winter.

Planning Your Trip

Most budget accommodations open only from late May to early September. In winter, there’s little chance of accommodations other than large hotels in Reykjavik and the main towns. Given the long distances involved to reach Iceland, flying is the quickest and cheapest option. The highest airfares are around June to August when the weather is best. Fares drop September to November and April to June, and you get the best prices during the low season, November to March. The most convenient flights from Europe and Asia go through London; there are direct flights from the US, but Canadian travelers need to go via the US.

Cancun Has A New Draw For Divers

Early this year, a pair of professional divers uncovered a new landmark beneath Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula. After years of searching and thousands of dives, Steve Bogaerts and his dive partner, Robbie Schmittner, were able to find a connection between two massive underwater cave systems. Bogaerts and Schmittner performed more than 500 dives of several hours over a course of four years to connect the world’s second-longest (Sistema Sac Actun) and third-longest underwater caves (Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich). Since then, the Sistema Sac Actun (White Cave System) has assumed the title of the world’s largest underwater cave. At over 95 miles in length, Sac Actun also stands as the ninth-largest cave in the world, including all dry cave systems.

As underground waterways of this size are certainly rare, the development of the cave system over thousands of years provides an equally interesting story. Several unique factors play a role in the creation of the area’s sinkholes and eventually the underground rivers. The stretch of the Yucatan Peninsula known as the Riviera Maya rests on a base of porous limestone, a stone that allows rainwater to easily enter the underground cave systems. Meanwhile, the rainforests of the Yucatan Peninsula attract considerable precipitation, all of which drains toward the Caribbean Sea.

After the water seeps through the limestone and moves slowly east, the relatively flat ground near the coastline fosters the creation of sinkholes – known to divers and scientists as cenotes. Underground, the water becomes slightly acidic and dissolves rock as it moves, carving out these remarkable caves. In fact, these unique ecological elements were also responsible for the world’s previous longest underground cave system – the 91-mile Sistema Ox Bel Ha, also located in the Riviera Maya.  

The cenotes, caves and rivers have played an important role in the cultural history of the region, as well. The Mayan culture depended on the fresh water found in these systems for centuries, while the underground rivers currently support the tourist industries of Cancun and Cozumel. At the same time, the rivers are important to scientists analyzing the human impact on the environment. In fact, Bogaerts states that the adventurous divers seeking out the connections of underground rivers serve as the “eyes and hands” of geologists, biologists, chemists and other environmental researchers.

Beyond the thrill of the dive, the cave system highlights important ecological issues regarding the area’s drainage patterns. Bogaerts says, “The point is that they’re so interconnected. There are so many cave systems that if there’s a point of pollution in any one particular area it can spread very extensively throughout the entire system.” According to the divers, “awareness is growing, but it must keep pace with the extremely rapid pace of development.”

For the tourist, the discovery of such underground systems has opened the door to some of the most incredible dive opportunities in the world. Thanks to the connection made early this year, divers can visit several popular cenotes while advanced divers can explore the dark depths of this unique system. Entering the system through one of the area’s numerous cenotes, divers will find over 500,000 feet of caves to explore. According to an online message posted by Bogaerts after the discovery, divers now have the opportunity to explore several popular cenotes as part of a single cave. He claims that “it is now possible to traverse from the Pabilany cenote – west of the Calimba cenote on the Coba Road – around the Grand Cenote (Sac Actun), Cenote Esqueleto (Temple of Doom), Cenote Naval, Cenote Abejas, Cenote Nohoch Kin, bypass Manati, press on to Balancanche, Cenote Nohoch Nah Chich, pass by the Dinner Hole Cenote and end up in the Dirty Dog or Pet Cemetery Cenotes.” If you are familiar with diving around Cancun or have begun researching your trip to the area, this new path is sure to excite. 

Bogaerts and Schmitter will continue exploring the Riviera Maya’s underwater caves, searching for more connections. Some have speculated that Sistema Sac Actun could be connected to at least two additional cave systems, caves that would add an additional 125 miles in length. There is even a possibility that the Riviera Maya might surpass the world’s largest cave system – a title currently held by the 360-mile Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky.

Time will tell what else lies beneath Cancun and the Riviera Maya. In the meantime, visitors can explore some of the most important – and undeniably unique – caves in the world.

Bahamas: Diving And Water Adventures

Ocean adventures and the Bahamas just go together. The Bahamas are 700 islands and 2,000 islets (called cays or keys) scattered across more than 100,000 square miles of the western Atlantic Ocean. From a point roughly 70 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida, this great archipelago extends 750 miles southward to the northern Caribbean, almost to the island of Hispaniola. With great weather all year, warm waters, fine beaches, and teeming coral reefs, the Bahamas offer endless delights for outdoor enthusiasts, especially divers and sports fishermen.

The islands in the Bahamas are generally low and flat. The highest point in the entire archipelago, on Cat Island, is only 206 feet above sea level. Of the islands and islets making up the archipelago, only about 30 are inhabited. Some are so tiny, they’re just boulders that appear and disappear with the rise and fall of the ocean. Some are long and thin, stretching for many miles. Others are home to thousands of people. The vast majority of the islands are deserted, with pristine beaches and tropical forests untouched by humans.

Tourism has brought prosperity to the Bahamas, but the great natural beauty of the islands has managed to remain unspoiled. In earlier days, unrestricted exploitation inflicted a lot of damage on Nassau and New Providence. All that has changed and today the people of the islands feel strongly that the unique beauty of their archipelago should be preserved: conservation is the new watchword of the Bahamas, and many conservation groups operate in the archipelago.

The more well-known cities and places in the Bahamas are Nassau, the largest city in the country, located on New Providence Island; Paradise Island, a long, narrow barrier island connected to Nassau by a toll bridge; Freeport, the second largest city, on the Grand Bahama Island. Grand Bahama has become something of an environmental headquarters of the islands. Beyond the cities lies another world: the Out Islands of Abaco, Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, the Exumas, Harbor Island, Long Island, and so on.

In a nation completely surrounded by the clearest of waters in the world, there are plenty of water sports and waterborne adventures. Before you immerse yourself in all the water adventures, remind yourself that the Bahamas offer plenty of opportunity to explore different habitats and spot rare birds. There are three endemic species – the Bahama woodstar hummingbird, the Bahama swallow and Bahama yellowthroat warbler. When to Go

The Bahamas are blessed with beautiful sunny weather and relatively constant temperatures year-round. The high season for travel runs from the middle of December to mid-April, when people in the northern hemisphere try to escape the chilly temperatures back home. Fares drop during the May to September period, called the ‘shoulder season’ in the industry, and you can get the best prices during the low season from October to mid-December. It is good to remember that flying on weekends ordinarily adds a few dollars to the fare.
